My name is Elise Webb and I am Holy Covenant’s Administrative Assistant, a position which gave me a unique perspective of our Summer Lunch Program last year.
I know the numbers involved: 150 volunteers served over 10,000 lunches to over 500 children in our community.
I know the motivation involved: Our mission committee saw a need in our own area for hungry children to be fed.

Summer Lunch Box Volunteer 2009 |
|
We arrived early to our site each day to get set up and prepared to hand out boxed lunches. Most days, there were children there – waiting for us. Some walked from their homes near by; some were driven by parents; and some came on bikes.
One little guy road his bike on the sidewalk – keeping his distance – until he could check us out from a far. He finally rode up and when checking off his name from the list, it was noted there were two boys in this family - a 9 year old and 13 year old. Assuming this little guy was the 9 year old – we asked if he was going to take a lunch to his big brother. With a big grin he said “I am the big brother!” That became his nickname for the rest of the week.
There is a mix of cultures in the group of children. Sweet, soft spoken voices with some difficult last names made checking the children off the list a little challenging. After a few day of scanning the lists for names, one little girl came up and said promptly says “my name begins with O!”
