The ECDP kids have had a great time with their Community Helpers unit. Policemen from the Carrollton Police Department visited with a motorcycle, the canine unit, and a member of the SWAT team. The kids were delighted when the motorcycle was ridden into the Covenant Center gym! They were in awe of the equipment which a SWAT officer has to wear and use. Pre K teacher, Rechele Bonner, was outfitted as a tactical officer much to the delight of the children.
The Carrollton Firefighters also visited. They talked to the children about fire safety, the duties of firefighters and paramedics, and about their uniforms. The children listened to the walkie talkies and observed many pieces of equipment.
Zita DeGraffenreid from Zita Cookies spoke to the children about being a baker. They were very interested in all of her baking equipment, and loved the cookie samples she provided. Captain Denny Mosseller, Southwest Airlines, spent time with the kids. The children loved his model airplanes – one of a Southwest airplane and the other of Shamu. He shared flying wings with them as well as small bags of pretzels. Respiratory therapist, Mike Harland, visited dressed in his lab coat. He talked with the children about keeping their lungs healthy and about the use of breathing treatments to help people feel better. Nurse Wendy Begg was the last to visit. She explained her job as a nurse, showed the equipment she needs to check children’s health, and even wrapped some kids’ arms in a splint.
A great time was shared by all of the children. They learned a lot about the different jobs that people have.
