Matthew 22.37-39 37Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[b] 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]

alatians 3:28  There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

ImageThe early Church recognized the importance of urban areas.  The Apostle Paul’s ministry and letters to Ephesus, Philippi and Corinth report this.  John Wesley’s preaching and ministry was centered in England’s urban areas and was filled with the masses of the English Revolution.  Today, a drive through Dallas reveals United Methodist and other denomination churches everywhere.

But there is an urban community ‘lost” inside the 1635 Loop of northwest Dallas, at Webb’s Chapel N/S and Park Lane E/W.  In this community live hundreds of thousands of people, primarily in apartments.  Most are Hispanic immigrants who work at minimum wage jobs.  Their children attend Burnet and Cigarroa elementary schools and 85% receive free or reduced price lunches.

Rev. Owen Ross is pastor and friend the people here.  Fluent in Spanish and with a heart full of Christ’s love, he has ministered to this community for over four years.  Beginning with an after-school ministry to children, Rev. Owen guides the following growing ministries:

  • Three Sunday morning worship services are held weekly, with an average attendance of over 100.
  • An after-school program, directed by a Project Transformation staffers and volunteers from UM churches offers reading and math tutoring, exercise and music.
  • Youth gather for fun, music and Bible study on Friday evenings and for a new youth-oriented worship service on Sunday evenings.
  • Two, boy & girl mixed soccer teams.

Holy Covenant UMC is one of ten United Methodist Churches that have entered into a covenant relationship with Christ’s Foundry.  This commitment involves financial assistance and volunteers to help with their mission programs.  If you would like to help in this important local mission, please contact the church office for more information.
