SPANISH with Ali Dawson

ImageWe have learned so much in Spanish.  The kitchen is the favorite place to be during Spanish.  We have made and tasted:
Limonada - We learned about the color Amarillo (yellow), squeezed the limones (lemons), added azucar y hielo (sugar and ice).  It was delicioso.

Chocolate - We made hot chocolate using a molinillo (mixer) to mix the chocolate.  We learned that chocolate comes from the cacao plant and that it grows in the rainforest.

Masa - We had our hands in masa, the dough that is used to make tamales.  The story “Too Many Tamales” taught the virtue of telling the truth.  The kids were able to stick their hands in the dough to feel how sticky it is.

We also made buenuelos and jamaica. Our kitchen time is not over yet.  We still have to make tortillas.  Yummy!

The kids like to talk about things that they like and things that they don’t like to eat.  Me gusta and No me gusta.

We have read so many stories:  Carlos and the Skunk, Carlos and the Squash Plant,  Skippyjon Jones, Gracias the Thanksgiving Turkey, Chocolate, a book that talks about where chocolate comes from, Too Many Tamales and so many more.

We have played games like:  Words that sound the same in English and in Spanish and BINGO el alfabeto.  We have learned about girl words and boy words (masculine and feminine) by looking at the word endings.  Masculine words have an “O” at the end and feminine words end in an “A”.

We are learning songs and poems.  The latest poem is Llueve, llueve, llueve.  This is the Spanish version of Rain, Rain Go Away.  We are in the process of learning Jesus Loves Me - Cristo Me Ama.

The weather:  Hace sol, hace lluevia, hace viento, hace nieve, and hace nubes.  We talk about it being cold or hot outside (afuera).  Sunny, rainy, windy, snowy and cloudy.

We have learned numbers, colors, feelings, family, our bodies, opposites, weather, food, music, books, poems, songs, clothes, simple conversation, manners and more.

I wish this newsletter could cover all the fun things that we do in Spanish.  Things to be looking forward to:
The celebration of Pascua (Easter) will consist of making cascarones - confetti filled eggs.  Yes, the kids have to blow the eggs out of the shell.

Pinatas - We celebrate Cinco de mayo.  Remember that Cinco de mayo is not Mexico’s independence from Spain.  Cinco de mayo refers to the Battle of Puebla.  The kids will get to fill the piñatas with candy prior to the celebration and decorate candy bags.  Cinco de mayo celebration will be Wednesday, April 30th and Thursday, May 6th.

I have enjoyed your children so much.  They are ALL a blessing to me.

Attentament,
Senora Dawson
