Holy Covenant Youth News: March 2015

Holy Covenant Youth News!

Hi everyone!

Can you believe Easter is almost here?  We’re also 1/4 the way through 2015!  We’ve had a great start to the year with Civil Rights Bus Tour and Winter Retreat as great highlights.  After Easter, we’ll wind down Confirmation and gear up for Senior Sunday and Confirmation Sunday.  Then we’re moving on to Summer.  Check out the bits of info below and feel free to respond with any questions or concerns.

Youth Council Meeting this Sunday 12:10!

We will meet to discuss the next few months of events.  We’ll start by solidifying the Easter Sunrise Service, and then discuss other upcoming events, including an invitation we received to join a volleyball tournament in May!  We plan to be done by 1:15.

ALSO- We’ll be discussing what out summer programming will look like, especially weeks of events we hope to volunteer at.  Parents- look out for sheets with info of those dates.

Summer Mission and Music tour—Under Construction

We’ve been in conversations about what it would look like to combine Choir Tour and Mission Trip.  As great as the trip will be, we’ve encountered some obstacles and are still working on everything.  One of the biggest obstacles is we would like to hear back from as many people as possible who would have interest in joining us- youth or adults.  To get to Orlando and DisneyWorld we need to have a good sized group (12-15+ youth) and we haven’t heard near the feedback through Debbie’s emails.  We have a great ministry we can work with in mission, and we really want to see this trip happen, but we need to have an idea of who actually can make it.  The latest plan we’ve come up with is leaving on June 22nd in the afternoon and coming back on June 29th and includes a few Choir Tour concerts, 3 days in mission and a full day at Disney World!  This could be a great event to invite friends too as well.  What say you?

UMYF Snack Supper Sign-up

Look for an email in the coming days regarding Snack Supper Sign-up.  We will have 9 Sundays that we’ll need meals for through the month of June.  I really don’t want to spend Budget money on these meals, so if you could sign up that would be great!  It’s meant to be a snack supper, so most folks can provide the meal for less than $30, and in fact if you’d rather donate $30 we can take that donation and get a meal set up!  Either way, we need to feed the youth!

Harvey’s Kids (April 11th and May 9th)

We’ve had some great participation in Harvey’s Kids, and would love to have more youth join us.  We’re making some changes that we think will bring more structure to our time together and we think it will make it easier and more fun for both the kids and our volunteers.  If you’re coming, feel free to help set up at 4:30.  We’ll also be looking for groups or folks to help lead craft stations or help provide the meal for the evening.  Let me know if you and/or your youth is interested in either of those.

Lunch and Learn April 12th
Martha Giles of ‘Touched by Suicide’ will be here to share her experience and offer us ways to support individuals who may contemplate or attempt suicide.  I think this event will have tremendous value and hope that we have many youth and families of youth in attendance as this is something most of us care about but may not be fully informed on.  There is a light lunch being provided but you need to RSVP to Patti Jenkins by phone 214-417-4629 or email [email protected]

Senior Sunday (May 17th)

Calling all Seniors!  I know our lives change and we focus on different things we get older.  For some of our Seniors, Holy Covenant is still home yet other obligations make participation harder and more sporadic.  I don’t care how long it’s been since you’ve joined us for UMYF, we still want to celebrate you and your graduation on May 17th!  In order to do that, I need some basic info and invite you to help us plan what the worship will look and feel like.  Also, we need pictures to help make the slide show we’ll make.  We typically ask for 4-6 photos from each Senior, depicting the stages from baby to now!  Please let me know if your youth has interest in joining us!

New Youth Leaders

As many of you know, Andrew Smith recently moved out of town and Melanie Luce will be stepping back once Taylor graduates.  We’re excited for the new opportunities for each of them, but that creates a need for new Youth Leaders for our group.  I KNOW some of you current parents are great, and have heard about some of our former youth parents that y’all are great as well.  Right now the primary time commitment would be Sunday evenings 6-8 pm for UMYF.  As we grow, we’ll consider other times and opportunities to experience community together.  If you’d like to talk about this with me further, let me know!
