What is Happening This Week 12/17-12/20/20

Holy Covenant Family, We have some very gifted and talented counselors in our church family. We have invited them to write a hopeful note each week during this Advent season. We are so grateful for their insight and pearls of wisdom! Today we have great wise words from Anne Michael:

Dealing with depression and anxiety during these difficult times.
As a practicing therapist, I have seen a marked increase in depression and anxiety this year. Here are some straight foreword ways to help.

First, take care of the basics. This is really important and will go far to help with symptoms of depression (sadness, lack of motivation, feelings of hopelessness, guilt, low self-esteem) and anxiety (constant fear and worry with physical symptoms like racing heart, shortness of breath, and nausea). Many who suffer try to “self -medicate” with food, drugs and alcohol.
Those basics include:
-Eating-don’t skip meals. Eat healthy and limit salt and fat in your diet.
-Sleeping You do need 8 hours of sleep. Try it for one week and see if you feel better. Exercise This is one of the best ways to mitigate mild anxiety and depression.
-Exercise 30 minutes per day.
-Get outside! This will take more effort as temperatures cool and days get shorter, but it can really help. Try the labyrinth at Holy Covenant.

What else can help? Talking to someone. It can be a trusted friend or a therapist. Practice relaxation breathing for 5 minutes several times a day. Take slow deep breaths -4 seconds in and 4 out. Write in a journal, play music or sing, paint or draw.

If your symptoms interfere with work, school or relationships, or you have thoughts of suicide, it is time to seek professional help. Begin with your primary care physician who may recommend you seek therapy and who may refer you to a psychiatrist (a doctor who specializes in mental health).
